Partially because my thoughts have been traveling with the rest of me, exploring the dimensions of young love and this new glamorously lifestyle I seem to have fallen into. Not to undermine my past adventures, but those bright lights were always part of the work package. Now, as a spectator, traveling for moral support and side-stage approval bobbing, my load has been lightened drastically. It’s almost addicting, to get sucked up into a world where curious eyes stick to your attire while fingers interlock with a significant other (who just happens to be somewhat of a rockstar). When I was younger I very adamantly scowled at the idea of dating someone who’s job comes with a contract of eye-fucking and tumblr fan girls.

At the end of the day I am not satisfied with primarily taking on the side-kick girlfriend role in domestica, as stability does threaten but never suppress my passion. I want to live in New York City, sip glasses of wine, light candles, and dance on wooden floors to the sounds of Fleetwood Mac with an audience of a single, wise siamese cat. I want to stay out late and have lonely subway rides on the L-train, my eyes tracing the outline of mysterious souls, narrating their travels inside my twisted mind. I want to work ridiculous hours and travel the world as someones bitch for a period of time, until the tables turn and its me wearing the mysterious shades. I never thought these dreams were obtainable while in union with another body, until I met him. Everything fell (and is falling) into place, allowing me the freedom and solidarity I need to refresh my sanity levels while providing the comfort and love of another individual. This rare finding has been the greatest thing to come out of my career, ranking far above countless all access passes and lacking after parties.

I guess what I am addressing in this early morning typefest is that change is inevitable. By putting yourself out there and being more receptive to new things, everything you know can gracefully transition into a whole new world you never knew existed.

————————————————————————————————————-

I roam the halls during the day, rechare in buzzing music venues at night, and spend my weekends and free time
in an handful of glowing cities. Comprehension and conditioning myself into the ever changing environments I face has never been the issue, but simply having the power and control to retain the countless memories and faces that flow through my daily routine is something I have noticed diminish. Maybe this uncertainty and inability to fully return to reality is why I find so much comfort in the drone of music. Whether I am walking while having a staring contest with the tile of my school hallways, biking down the deserted path to school, or hugging my knees in sterile hotel rooms, music has always been the constant, restoring my sanity while softly calling me back to this weird level of purgatory where I float between the stages of insanity and simplicity. I am tired of living a double life, not having the capability to place all my unhatched eggs in a single basket but attempting to follow two, very distant paths while half-assing everything on the way to total freedom from the shackles of school and the restraints of my forced adolescence lifestyle.

Currently listening to:
Dead cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts - M83

HOLY SPIRIT, OUR BEACON

I’m sitting backstage at a Manhattan venue, two thousand miles from home, watching the conversations of beautiful people unfold in slow motion. This natural flow of movement, filled with thrill, comfort, and character, is not limited to the activity within the lime-striped walls of Santos Party House, but mutually present within the unique sound of the rising New York electronic duo, Beacon.

Outside the soggy fruit and beer bottle littered green room, the crowd of KillScreen Magazine’s event buzzes with enjoyment, as beady eyes remain locked on glowing screens linked to video game counsels. Within moments of Beacons flickering graphics (a combination of busty, pixelated gals and Justin Bieber apperances) the crowd has shifted focus, entering a state of mesmerization characterized by antsy feet and gripped plastic cups. For a small two piece group to hold the attention of some of New York’s most dedicated gamers, this is quite an accomplishment. The diverse activity within the crowd is parallel to the different connection and reaction felt within the listener. Beacon can evoke a feeling of emptiness, a soundtrack to a late night stroll or even a sound to drown out the monotony of ones daily routine. Beacon can lift the soles of shoes, shooting the ticket-stub owner into un-choreographed bobs and prolonged blinks. Beacon can also provide ambiance for late night travels or candle lit company. Whatever way one chooses to experience the versatile sound, Beacon will not compromise, but add, in any amount, to the certain atmosphere.

There is no eloquent way to put it; Beacon is truly fucking amazing. Unlike many of their genre contenders (Ratatat, Holy Fuck) this electronic duo leaves much room for imagination while keeping the rhythm at a smooth sway to the angelic vocals to the anticipated drops. My serendipitous introduction to this power team only attributes to a fraction of my immediate attraction to their unique sound. The swoons of Tom Mullarney III mingle like old romance with the digestible beats of Jacob Gosset, creating a certain ambiance within their audience that is parallel to the weightless feeling of euphoria when one ascends into an ideal state of mind, shedding any preexisting fear of acceptance or cautious hips. As illustrated in a prior post, an airport encounter parallel to the next led to me slipping a pair of headphones over my ears, pouring the improvement of Katy Perry’s Last Friday Night into my senses, which would never fully drain out.

NO BODY EP

BEACON - No Body EP Trailer from BEACON on Vimeo.

The four tracks featured on Beacon’s “No Body EP” are instrumentally comprised of modern electronic music staples. Hushed, pulsating percussion keeps time and is punctuated by subtle clave clicks (See Through You) or echoing finger snaps (No Body). Melodies are synthesized by familiar series of bleeps and bloops and are maintained by undulating drones that flow understatedly over the barline (Girl in a Coma). All this is augmented by occasional sonic flourishes in the form of a soulful vocal sample or a Doppler-effected synth echo (See Through You).

At first listen, these salient musical details echo through one’s ear canal to evoke a sense of cold impersonality. With subsequent listens, however, this initial emotional response gradually becomes warmer. There is a marked element of humanism in the music of Beacon that heats a bleak landscape of zeros and ones like rays of sunlight cast across frozen tundra. This patch of warmth on the otherwise chilly(wave) terrain of electronic music comes from the vocal presence on each track. Such an identifiable human component cultivates an intimacy with the listener and causes the listening experience to unfold like a relationship, progressing from impersonal to intimate with aesthetic and emotional appeal.

Don’t you know what you want? How can you stand it, not to know?”

Before my New York departure I found myself crisscrossed on the lysoled floor of a standard terminal bookstore, flipping through the crisp pages of The Fountainhead while contemplating an unspeakable act. My last night in New York had bled into my 8:45 flight to PHX, the big city mentality beckoning me to channel my inner aspiring-something-artist and live out of the contents of my suitcase. Reality sunk in, and I boarded the plane. I still don’t know if I made the right decision in returning to the stability Arizona has to offer, but I am preparing myself for a swift departure into a semi-permanent residence outside of Phoenix.

When did I make the transition from enthusiasm to apathy, you ask? NEVER! My stomach still filled to the brim with flutters when a Tim and Eric reference was made on the streets of Chinatown, as a Strokes song seeped though the headphones of a thick-rimmed glasses boy plopped next to me on the subway, especially as my Happy Birthday Thom playlist filled the walls of 285 Kent during my DJ set with Cassie Ramone. Even as my boots licked the pavement of the Lower East Side as Jeff Magnum narrated my directionless stroll, my face could not restrict the curl of my lips as the polluted breeze flirted with my dirty hair. The stack of college algebra and Purity Ring EP are currently working double time to exterminate all daydreaming and snap me back into the harsh reality that I am two thousand miles away from my hearts habitat.

The only thing keeping me from DIVE(ing) head first into the Brooklyn lifestyle and leaving the mexican food of Arizona in the dust is the element of relevancy. Everything in Brooklyn appears extremely temporary and defined not by the lasting effect but by the current cool rating. From the music perspective, one moment you can go from packing thick-rimmed glasses like sardines in a DIY venue to struggling to maintain the once bangs-babe filled lifestyle. Before I submerge myself into that I want to be established and have a firmer grip on my career in the city. That being said, I still adore the place, but find the constantly shifting buzz to be mildly overwhelming. Although it is quite the band incubator, where does the buzz go to die? In the withering hours of my visit, I found myself clutching my bruised knees in a random closet as tears washed away my thick eyeliner and my iphone kissed my right cheek. I was sobbing on the phone with a close friend, describing my premature departure and desire to spontaneously miss my flight and survive off of crumbs and guest list spots. The response that slapped me back onto my 9am flight was that there will always be things to do, and to define New York by the nightlife would push me into a shallow life where my biggest decision would be what DIY place to post up for the noche. New York, I love you, and I won’t let you bring me down.

In five minutes flat, the breathy groans of Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor, combined with the magnetic emotion expressed between the two female protagonists, create the ultimate music video experience. Instead of a upclose grainy flowers and city lights compilation, Los Angeles director John Heeg captures the essence of young love, loosing control, and raw emotion strung out in the city of angles. From the bedroom to a bar fight, the extreme contrasts are perfectly executed in a St. Vincent matter and accompanied with realistic yet ascetically appealing imagery. The evolution of soft strums to riffs is illustrated with saliva smacking the dirty grounds of public transportation, serving as the turning point to the track. From the middle finger to the rough bar violence, we watch the hard shell of the noseringed girlfriend crack as the song ascends into the bedroom of Chris Taylor’s fantastic discography.

Lana Del Rey

To say cynical words were not stirring in my mind upon first viewing a Lana Del Rey music video would make me a big fat liar. However, the context of my Lana exposure was far from organic. While reading the snarky Hipster Runoff coverage of this up-and-coming artist, it was impossible to prevent the negativity from temporarily permeating my thoughts and clouding my judgement. Even later in the evening, my verdict was: (Ignore the Tommy Wiseau quote at first)

Exhibit one of my snarky ‘tude illustrated through my hipster runoff flavored bias.

As an avid music listener, my negative view on her image did not prevent me from an in-depth tune in to her music. Forty seconds into her track “Blue Jeans” and I felt like a total asshole. It might of been the dynamic chorus, sparked epiphany, or blossoming regret for my judgement, but I reached an important realization: When the classic image, puffed lips, and trimmed vintage video clips have been minimized, all we have is this powerful voice and beautiful music. Crazy outfits and emphasized facial features do not make an artistic, the extent of their musical capabilities is what stands the test of time. Yes, her image could be seen as “gimmickly” or false, but at Lizzie’s core, she is an extremely talented musician who deserves this amount of coverage and fame. However, the biting words and low blows directed towards Lizzy Grant is borderline 4chan behavior. Instead of bashing on her image, take three minutes and enjoy the music. Authenticity will always be questioned, but the emotions evoked through her vintage growls is as solid as her youtube view count.

That being said, its sad that such a beautiful voice had to go through such drastic exterior transformation just to crack through to the industry.

As a fresh intern for the prominent Arizona concert promoters, Stateside Presents, I felt a bit established but mostly just euphoric with the realization that my foot had been shoved between the door and frame. Concert Whore celebrated it’s two month birthday, with a few thousand hits adding fire to my growing independence. I started to actually become educated with the hear-and-now of music, instead of feasting on past jewels. MP3, blogs, and concerts became more of a safe-haven, shielding me from the mean stares and rude comments that seemed to gravitate towards to me at my catholic school. For once in my life, I truly didn’t even acknowledge the squinted eyes and scrunched noses, my converse stood firm in their values. Along with becoming established became the storm of requests for tickets and music advice, which was actually invigorating at first. I left the house wearing concert shirts and came home to a wall adorned with muse posters and a beckoning tumblr dashboard. My hair finally stopped falling out, and my chronic illness officially was labeled dormant. Hipster Runoff was my home page, and I started out every morning with a dose of Carles flavored wit and Special K cereal.

If you aren’t going to roll down the windows and lick up the wind like a dog, why are you even going on a road trip in the first place? Soak up the sun, let the sunshine massage your back, and have the wind knot your hair. Maybe even pack a candy picnic equipped with ringpops and obnoxiously sized lollypops that will transform your tongue into a Smurfs extra. Oh, and remember to bring your friends Nelly, Jeff Mangum, Belle, and even Sebastian along if you have a boombox.

How exactly am I supposed to sum up my entire high school experience in two lines? Years of rash decision making, raw emotion, toxic levels of angst all expressed through the words of someone else seem almost impossible. As I mentally flip through files of song lyrics stored inside my teenage brain, very few seem up to parr for such importance. Although I emotionally checked out of my education experience in 2009, I still feel the need to leave some piece of me… An estranged footprint, paving the way for other individuals who feel alienated by the regimented catholic school experience and harsh nature of their peers. Although I am not creating a senior page, attending school dances, participating in school sponsored clubs, or building lasting relationships within the catholic walls, I do take happen the quote seriously.

Here are some of my narrowed down options briefly plucked from my bottomless library of meaningful tunes.

“you looked ok with the others,
you looked great by yourself”

-destroyer

“and a penny for your thoughts was never enough, your head gets filled with that stuff.”

“And I don’t want to die without shaking up a leg or two,

Yeah, I want to do some dancing too.”
